In a recent announcement, Idea Cellular announced the rollout of its Idea VoLTE service to the public in a few circles. The Service was announced on Tuesday and the rollout will start on May 2 across the six circles. The telecom operator had launched the VoLTE services to its employees in March this year that was restricted to four circles. The VoLTE service is expected to be rolled out to the other circles in the near future and Idea is also offering a bonus addon of 10GB Data for free to the customers who make their first call on the VoLTE service.
Idea has now become the fourth operator in India to offer VoLTE service that was first started by Jio in 2016. This suite was then followed by Airtel and then Vodafone as they began testing the service as a private beta before making it available to the public. The VoLTE service provides a superior voice quality by transferring the voice over the 4G LTE network and this helps eliminate the background noise. Idea Cellular also promises a reduced call connection time and more battery optimization. The idea of VoLTE is that the 4G data services be interrupted even when on call, this is normally not true in other cases as the network shifts to a slower 3G or 2G network to accommodate the call.
During an announcement, Sashi Shankar, CMO, Idea Cellular said,
“The launch of Idea VoLTE is testimony to our commitment to digitally connect customers, and a major milestone in Idea’s mobility journey. We aim to provide a better and richer call quality experience to our customers through this revolutionary new technology.”
Customers using Idea VoLTE service will be able to use the 4G data while also making a phone call. The users who move out of 4G serviced are will be dropped down to a 3G or a 2G network based on availability using Single Radio Voice Call Continuity.
The launch announcement was made for the Gujarat, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Maharashtra & Goa circles. The VoLTE calls will be charged as per the customers existing tariff plan and there won’t be any changes in terms of charges. Idea is also partnering with several handset providers to ensure availability of the Idea VoLTE service on their smartphone. Existing customers with a 4G sim and a 4G handset that has VoLTE service enabled will be able to experience the high-quality VoLTE service roll out soon.
