With Windows 10, managing your Wi-Fi is really important. There can be instances where your computer is using your Wi-Fi in the background and you’re not aware of it. In Windows 8 and 8.1, it was much simpler to manage your background data, but with Windows 10, it is not so easy. Especially with Windows Updates, as they are automatically downloaded on your computer when you’re on a Wi-Fi.
Even though you might have an unlimited connection at home, but if you travel and use your phone’s Mobile Hotspot as a Wi-Fi connection, it is good to at least set that connection as a metered one.
In Windows 10, there are two types of connections, metered and unmetered. Metered connections are the ones that you have a data cap on, and don’t want to use for background data, just for your browsing stuff. You can set your connection as metered to avoid additional charges.
Let’s begin on how you can set a connection to be a metered connection in Windows 10.
Set a Wi-Fi connection as Metered in Windows 10
In order to set your Wi-Fi connection metered, follow the following steps.
- Open Settings on your computer by pressing the Win Key + I on your keyboard (check out more Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows 10).
- In settings, choose Network and Internet.
- There, under Wi-Fi on the left, make sure that you’re connected to the Wi-Fi network that you want to set as metered.
- Scroll down on the right side, until you see Advanced Options. Then, click on that
- Here, click on the switch under Metered Connection to “On” and from then, that specific Wi-Fi network will be considered as a metered one by Windows.
I hope you were able to set your Wi-Fi connection as a metered one in Windows 10. Do let me know in the comments section below which connection did you set as metered and why. For example, I’ve set my phone’s Wi-Fi network as metered so that I don’t incur any additional charges in my phone bill if I connect it to my computer.
