We got a sneak at the Night mode feature in the developers preview of Android M last year but it was not included in the final build, for reasons known to Google themselves. But the Night mode makes a comeback in Android N and is a part of the system UI tuner which confirms its presence in the final build. It is always hard to look at the white settings page and UI at night or in darkness and can affect your eyes, we have seen only one option under Night Mode in Android M which was using a dark theme.
With night mode in Android M you get the same dark theme option along with two other options, to adjust the tint of your display and the option to adjust brightness. There is this text written at the bottom “The dark theme is applied to core areas of Android OS that are normally displayed in a light theme, such as settings” which makes it clear that the feature has been included in the complete OS and not just superficially.
You have the option to manually turn Night Mode On or Off along with the option to set it to Automatic, this will turn Night mode On and Off automatically based on the location and time of day. This is a pretty handy feature as the Night mode will turn on automatically at night and turn off during day protecting your eyes from the sudden burst of brightness when you turn your phone on in dark places.
To get to the Night Mode option, you have to go to Settings, under system settings go to Color and appearance and then Night Mode. Here you will be getting the options mentioned above which can be adjusted as per your liking. The Tint option applies a red filter all over the OS which is similar to the Twilight app. If you are wondering if the red tint appears in screenshots, No it does not. The one thing which I loved about the Night mode is the freedom which has been given, for example, the option to turn on Tint even while using Light UI when the Night mode is turned off.

Let’s hope that this feature makes it to the final build of Android N, unlike Android M where it was seen in the preview but could not make it to the final OS.
