With the amount of Data being transferred every day and the increase in cloud storage, we are in constant need of internet to access files as well which in turn will be affecting your data plans. Data usage in the background will be used up and reach limits quite fast if you are on small prepaid data packs, even the earlier Android OS had options to set limit and warnings to your data usage but with Android N it is taken a step further. This new feature will not just help you keeping a limit or warning but increase data saving to make your small data pack last longer.
This Data Saver option can be found under Settings and from what I have understood about this new feature is, along with blocking background data which has been available in earlier OS as well, it will be keeping check on the data usage by apps in the foreground. To get this feature to work on every app, the App developers need to give permissions to their apps for using this feature. With even the foreground data being kept under control there is no information about data compression which is seen in Chrome.
If you want to selectively target certain applications and restrict Data, selective apps can be shortlisted and users can give permission for unrestricted data usage to selected apps. In Android Lollipop, there was an option called Restrict background data, when enabled would restrict apps from accessing cellular data in the background.
With even the foreground data being kept under control, you can comprehensively control data usage of your cellular data packs. There is no information about data compression which is seen in Chrome. Android N is bringing a lot of new features with it like the new Number Blocking feature, Night Mode, Doze Mode etc.
List of features of Android N:
- Call blocking in Android N
- Night mode in Android N
- Data Saver feature in Android N
- Redesigned Settings Menu UI in Android N
