Ok, you just got a new Xiaomi Mi 5, the flagship smartphone from Xiaomi, after a long wait if you were actually waiting for it since more than a year. Every other phone these days has some or the other problem (including the Redmi Note 3 problems) which is quite expected, but when the problem is something that hits the user experience as a whole, you got to be worried about it.
One such common problem for users is the heating of the phone. There are many users complaining about the heating of the phone while watching videos while charging the phone, while using GPS, or even while playing games. Here are a few of them that we noticed from the Xiaomi forums.
– phone is very hot even no extra apps working (Thread)
– Heating issues are there when watching videos, using camera or GPS. Temperatures are lik 55-65 degree C. (Thread)
– So I just received my mi5(Bought with an f-code that I won on this forum) and then I tried to boot it up. During boot up it heated up a lot and took a lot of time at the “Loading apps” screen. I thought it was one-time issue.
Afterwards I plugged my phone into charger and found that mi5 was overheating again reaching 50 degrees Celsius and above. I was NOT USING my phone during charging. Does anybody else have the same problem?
– The phone heats up while clicking photos too.
– I just got my Mi5 today and I am seeing similar temps on charging of phone and even while clicking photos, the phone became pretty hot. The system update says I am on the latest update. Should I contact the support? (Thread)
The list of complaints is never ending, and so is the number of people who are complaining knowing the fact that there are some expected things from this.
Quick Charge 2.0 charger or 3.0 charger?
Xiaomi’s Mi 5 supports the Quick Charge 3.0 technology but the company decided to bring only the QC 2.0 charger. Why? One might think that it should have costed them more, but the reason could also be that with such fast compression of the battery, the heating could be even more than what it already is. The fast charging right now works well but at times, you can’t even hold the phone properly because of the heat it generates.
If you know about the capabilities of the device and are using a QC 3.0 charger you had specifically bought for this phone, it is advised to get rid of it and use the standard QC 2.0 charger shipped in the box.
Software Update – check for it
Many users who complained about the issue were on global MIUI ROM but most of them were on some previous versions and were awaiting any software update that could fix it. Check the forums and if you see someone talking about a newer version that they got, better check or update manually, because usually the updates carry several minor fixes.
I am not facing many issues of heating on the MIUI 7.2.2.0 Global ROM, but if you are doing so, we already are seeing people getting 7.2.4.0 update, which is said to be tackling the heating issues. Check for the same on your device using Updater app, or manually update it by downloading the ROM.
Temperature around you!
This might again seem like something not very logical for a few, but that’s a fact. Smartphones aren’t packed with internal systems to cool down the phone to an extent that it goes below the room temperature. Why just smartphones? any gadget that has a cooling mechanism won’t be able to chill down the unit.
Currently, most of the places in India are hot. So much that the temperatures are crazily high (from 40-45 degree C) and if in this conditions, you see temperature of your phone be around 45-degree, don’t panic. That is just because you cannot see a temperature of 35-degree on it even if you are not aggressively using the phone.
I know, by the time the summer ends in India, you might have gone past the replacement or return time if you were thinking of doing that, but as a brand that is working hard in giving you a flagship and taking more than a year in making that, you know they wouldn’t have just shipped a phone without thinking about the heating issues and ways to tackling it.
Still doubtful and seeing excessive heating?
You updated to the latest version of MIUI, using the phone in a good cold environment and still seeing the Mi 5 heating issue on regular usage, then this is something you should visit the service centre for, and share the concern.
Xiaomi ditched Snapdragon 810 for its flagship and had come up with the Mi 5 with Snapdragon 820 with one of the reasons being – there will be lesser issues of heating. But if that is still happening and you are not happy about it – don’t ignore it.
Xiaomi has some replacement policy in place for those who have issues and want to replace their Mi 5 with a new unit because of the issues they are facing.
Don’t go with negative comments. This phone is awesome. Try it one time. This is currently best phone in the market.
I am also getting heating issue… After checking with customer care this issue is not resolved. It’s reaching around 45-46 degree temperature.
I won’t recommend this phone to anyone ….
I am also facing heating problem while downloads and charging with very few apps active. Xiaomi should do something about it.

Whilst some heating not a problem but I would like some advice on how to use the mi5 camera. My settings are HDR off, no flash and still photos. Sometimes I can just touch the button and burst pictures are taken. Other times a normal pic is taken. Other times after 2-3 shots or not even any prior shots it will not take a picture.
What are the best settings to simply point and shoot-what am I doing wrong. Not shooting all, bursting, being normal- what settings am I wrongly using.
