WhatsApp has become such a powerful communication tool, that you might even have a business running on your WhatsApp account. As important the app might be for you, it is as easy to use as well. But, the limitation here is that if you want to talk to a contact, the phone number is what is being used as a point of contact.
This might be a rare one, but you might want to change your phone number some day. Or switch between the primary and secondary SIM card numbers for business contacts. Whatever the reason, when you are planning to switch your phone number to a new one, you don’t want to the groups you are a part of.
If you are in such a situation, WhatsApp has an option to change the phone number, while retaining the account details, groups and the settings you already have for the current phone number. There are certain limitations, but once you accept and follow the steps based on that, the change of number isn’t hard at all.
Open WhatsApp and tap on menu button on the top right side, then tap on Settings.
In Settings, go to “Account” and you’ll see “Change number” option available.
Tap on Change number, and you will see some instructions before proceeding.
One thing to remember here is that you need to keep the second SIM active and not insert a totally new SIM which is not yet able to receive calls or SMS. If the new SIM is active, then proceed with the next step.
In the next screen, you need to enter the old phone number and the new phone number. This is very useful if you are moving to a new country and would want to use a new phone number but keep the groups active.
Just some verification and you are done. The account will now function with new phone number, and remove the old one.
