Qualcomm is developing a new technology called Snapdragon Sense ID, which uses ultrasonic waves to help read fingerprints, and the Xiaomi Mi5 is rumored to be one of the first devices to sport this reader. According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon Sense ID will be ready by end of the year.
With rumors of Xiaomi Mi5 sporting a Snapdragon 820 processor being true, it will be one of the first processors to sport the Snapdragon Sense ID. According to Qualcomm the latest Snapdragon 820 chip should be expected to arrive until early next year, meaning the Xiaomi Flagship will also be arriving in the same vicinity.
Ultrasonic readers are said to work by sending ultrasonic waves to scan the finger and create a 3D map of your fingerprint to unlock your device. This technology is much advanced than the 2D scan and more safer as it will be more accurate, which cannot be bypassed that easily. Another advantage over the 2D scan is the ability to work even when your finger is wet, which is not the case in 2D scanners used by companies like Samsung, Apple, LG, etc.
With Xiaomi restricted to China mainly and other Asian countries like India, Snapdragon Sense ID will go global when taken up by other companies which operate on a global scale, and with news from Samsung about their next Flagship the Galaxy S7 coming with a Snapdragon 820 Processor variant, we can expect this technology being used in it as well.
Xiaomi Mi5 has been in rumors from quite some time and is said to sport a Quad HD display and a 16MP rear camera and a 13MP front camera. Xiaomi has launched Xiaomi Mi 4C with a Snapdragon 808 processor with aggressive pricing in China. We can expect the Mi5 to be priced with some top of the line specifications around $400 which will be a really competitive price point with features like Snapdragon 820 and Sense ID.
