Xiaomi Mi 7 leaks suggest in-display fingerprint scanner and “top-notch”

After Vivo, Xiaomi is finally going to become the second smartphone manufacturer to implement an in-display fingerprint scanner. The Chinese smartphone manufacturer is said to launch the company’s this year’s flagship, the Xiaomi Mi 7, with an in-display fingerprint scanner.

The latest leak comes from Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun, who is said to have informally hinted that the company’s this year flagship shall feature an in-display fingerprint sensor, Mi 7. The news is also confirmed by a previous leak that showed off the alleged front-panel of Xiaomi Mi 7. The front panel had a notch on top with a chin at the bottom which has now become a trend.

In a recent comment thread on a weibo post about the newly launched Mi MIX 2S, Lei Jun was seen agreeing to a comment made by a user. The Xiaomi CEO agreed on the usage of an in-display fingerprint scanner to the comment made by the user who jokingly mentioned about it.

Last week, a leaked MIUI source code has also pointed towards the usage of an in-display fingerprint scanner on the Mi 7. Although the news should be taken with a grain of salt as it’s still not officially confirmed by the company.

According to a Geekbench listing, Mi 7, codenamed Xiaomi Dipper, is said to be powered by Snapdragon 845, an Octa-core chipset from Qualcomm, which is already being used by many companies in their flagship phones for 2018. Along with the beefy 845, the phone is said to have 6 GB/ 8 GB of RAM and should come with Android 8.0 Oreo and a notched display.

The listing can be confirmed as Xiaomi’s flagship device, as Xiaomi has a track record of codenaming its flagship smartphones with constellation names. The company has had their previous gen flagships, Mi5S and Mi 5S Plus, listed as Gemini and Capricorn, respectively.
