Sony did it for years now, and it actually had the company versions of its flagship smartphones every year with equal power when compared to the larger variant. It was called “Compact”; Samsung’s mini versions were not so powerful, they weren’t as pricey either. They simply called them “Mini”, but now Apple has ‘SE’, whatever that means.
Realizing how Apple introduced the “Still Expensive” variant of the iPhone, Samsung didn’t take much time before unveiling the Samsung Galaxy SE, calling it the “Super Expensive” phone so that it gives enough challenge to the iPhone SE. The phone, by the way, have specs almost similar to the ones packed in the Galaxy S6 that was introduced last year.
Speaking to Gizmo Times, MG Siddappah, the spokesperson for Samsung, who is known to give the most logical reasons to the questions of pricing, said “We understand the Indian customers well, and no wonder we are the biggest smartphone sellers here, thus we are introducing the Galaxy SE with a PayTM cashback of Rs. 2999, Makemytrip cashback at Rs. 2999, Flipkart Wallet amount of Rs. 1999, a free VR headset worth Rs. 8200, Freecharge credits of Rs. 1999, and some offers I forgot and you will receive a press release for the same later”.
“Indians likes offers”, says Mohd. Mustafa, a retailer in Hyderabad, “That is why you forget the number of things you offer when launching a phone in India, that is the case especially with Samsung”. “Just to add to it, we are giving a free tempered glass and bumper case with every purchase of the Galaxy SE in our store”.
One of the Apple fans took it to Twitter to let his followers know why he loved Apple. He tweeted “Baap baap hota hai. Dekha, Apple ka phone 40k aur Samsung ka copy 50k mein. Ab batao kaun jeeta”. He was well reminded by one of the Apple haters about “Samsung ke offer dekh, 18000 tak ka offer aur hum chalaak hai, price drop hoga tab lenge”. No surprises there, as Samsung usually drops the prices of its newly launched phones in a couple of months.
It is also heard that Sony and HTC are also coming up with their own “Super Exciting” and “Super Explosive” versions of Xperia and Desire phones respectively very soon.
We have contacted Sony and HTC to hear their views about this new SE phone market and the reason why they are launching the devices, though we know what the answers will be.
