San Francisco-based smartphone startup Nextbit has launched their first smartphone called Robin, which is said to bring you something new in smartphones which are getting boring these days with similar shaped devices, minor improvements and a lot of fuss created about it. Nextbit a startup founded by Tom Moss, former head of business development for Android at Google along with Mike Chan who worked on Android 1.0-3.0 versions as software engineer and Scott Croyle who was the principal at One + Co and was instrumental in designing some of the best looking smartphones like the Touch Diamond, HTC incredible Evo, etc.
The three of them together want to bring something new in the smartphone market related to the storage issues which are becoming a common problem for all smartphone users. They are going to use Nextbit’s cloud storage and make sure that the user of their new device Robin will never run out of space. Coming to the specifications the Robin comes with a 5.2-inch FullHD display with resolution of 1920×1080 pixels resolution, it is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor supported by 3GB of RAM.
There is a fingerprint sensor which is built into the Home button. It also comes with NFC and USB-C type connector and powered by a 2650 mAh battery which also has quick charge technology. The Robin will be launched in a price point which is termed as “premium tier” by Nextbit, which comes around the $400 mark. This is a very crowded and highly competitive segment with some successful competitors like OnePlus, Xiaomi, Asus, Obi, Huawei etc.
The main point which Nextbit is concentrating on is the storage space issue which has become a common problem with today’s smartphone, how much ever internal memory is provided will be used up and the user will be needing more. This makes the device slower and at some important movement the lack of space does not let you capture an important photo or Video. To counter this problem Nextbit is using their cloud storage service and providing 100 GB of free cloud storage with every Robin smartphone along with the 32GB of internal storage space.
Let see how this helps, in case your phone memory is full and you are taking a video, instead of getting a memory is full message interrupting you video capture, your Robin smartphone will automatically free up space by transferring some apps or photos or other files, which you are not using from a long time to Cloud storage.
In case any App is transferred, the app icon will become grey and can be restored back by just tapping on it. How and what exactly is the criteria which Nextbit is following to select data to transfer is not known. But with devices like Asus Zenfone 2 Deluxe special edition coming with 256 GB of internal storage, providing just 100GB of storage space with 32GB internal storage does not seem much of a unique feature to get users notice the Robin.
