Apart from the Mi Note 2, Xiaomi also announced the innovative Mi MIX and a new Mi VR at today’s launch event. The Mi MIX is a concept smartphone with a bezel-less display and several other astounding features. On the other hand, the Mi VR is the successor of the Mi VR Play. The Mi MIX sports a starting price of RMB 3499 (Rs. 34,500 or $516 USD approx.) and the Mi VR costs RMB 199 (Rs. 1950 or $29 USD approx.).
Xiaomi Mi MIX
The Mi MIX is Xiaomi’s very own concept phone. It sports an edgeless 6.44-inch display roped into a chassis which has a size of the 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus. This results in a whopping 91.3 percent screen is to body ratio which is certainly one of the highest in the mobile industry. The newly unveiled device comes with a full ceramic construction.
One of the pioneering features of the Mi MIX is the absence of the traditional earpiece and proximity sensor. Instead, Xiaomi has opted for an innovative Cantilever piezoelectric ceramic acoustic for the in-call audio and an ultrasonic proximity sensor placed below the display. The conventional selfie shooter is replaced by a repositioned camera unit placed below the screen. The new snapper is about half the size of standard camera modules.
The Xiaomi Mi MIX houses the latest Snapdragon 821 chipset with a peak clock speed of 2.35 GHz. This is presently one of the most powerful processors available in the smartphone market. Coming to memory, the flagship phablet has two different variants. The base model sports 4 GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 128 GB UFS 2.0 internal memory, while the top end one comes with 6 GB LPDDR4 RAM bundled with a massive 256 GB of UFS 2.0 onboard storage.
Talking about camera, a 16 MP rear autofocus unit sits at the back of the device. At the front, there is a 5 MP selfie unit. The Xiaomi Mi MIX comes with EIS (Electronic Image Stabilization) and can shoot 4K videos at 30 fps. The fingerprint sensor of the phablet is placed at the back just below the camera lens.
A mammoth 4400mAh Quick Charge 3.0 – enabled battery juices up the Mi MIX. The brand new smartphone is 4G LTE compatible and comes with the same high-precision GPS chip of the Mi Note 2. The lower end 4 GB / 128 GB model of the Mi MIX costs RMB 3499 (Rs. 34,500 or $516 USD approx.) and the top of the line 6 GB / 256 GB version sports a price tag of RMB 3999 (Rs. 39,450 or $590 USD approx.). The latter also boasts two 18K gold-plated rings placed around the rear camera lens and the fingerprint scanner.
Xiaomi Mi VR
The newly launched Mi VR is an upgrade from the first generation Mi VR Play. The latest VR headset comes with an onboard dedicated motion sensor. This hardware level sensor and deep system optimisations can deliver an ultra-low latency of 16 milliseconds if combined with a supported smartphone.
Unfortunately, the new Mi MIX is not compatible with the Mi VR. The headset natively supports only a handful of Xiaomi devices namely, the brand new Mi Note 2, Mi 5, Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus. The brand new virtual reality headset packs in a 9-axis inertial motion controller with support for touch inputs. Speaking of the price, the Mi VR costs RMB 199 (Rs. 1960 or $29 USD approx.)
