Samsung has announced that it is working on a production of world’s first 12gigabit (Gb) LPDDR4 RAM which should not be confused with Gigabyte (GB) and it comes to 6GB in simple terms. the present set of 4GB RAM in the market is termed as 8gigabit. Samsung has mentioned that the new chip is designed in such a manner to fit into the existing 3GB RAM module making it easy for production houses.
The new 12Gb DRAM or 6GB LPDDR4 RAM is said to be more than 30 times faster than its predecessor the 8Gb or 4GB RAM. It is twice as fast as the DDR4 DRAM for PC’s at 4,266 megabits per second (Mbps). It is not just faster but also more power-efficient and consumes 20 percent less energy than the previous model.
The manufacturing productivity of the 12Gb LPDDR4 has been raised more than 50 percent over its predecessor the 20nm-class 8Gb LPDDR4, which will in turn help in meeting the demand by Flagships of various companies willing to use this in their devices.
Joo Sun Choi, executive vice president of Memory Sales and Marketing at Samsung Electronics, said;
“By initiating mass production of 12Gb LPDDR4 mobile DRAM in an extremely timely manner, we now are not only helping OEMs to accelerate their moves to the next generation of mobile devices, but also providing functionality that will give mobile consumers greatly enhanced user experiences,”
The latest 12Gb LPDDR4 enables 3 GB or 6GB of mobile DRAM in a single package using two chips and four chips respectively. Samsung which already has a good list of 20nm DRAM like 4Gb, 6Gb, 8Gb and now 12Gb is added to make sure that the demand by manufacturers is met.
Talking about the future and scope of the new DRAM, Joo Sun Choi said;
“Furthermore, we intend to closely collaborate with our global customers to move beyond premium smartphones and tablets in creating new digital markets that embrace the full potential of cutting-edge technologies like next-generation mobile DRAM.”
Samsung is planning to use this next generation DRAM in devices other than smartphones and tablets. With the likes of ultra slim PC’s, digital appliances and automotive devices going digital the use of the DRAM can be useful.
With this announcement, we can be sure that the next set of Flagships by Samsung in 2016 like the Note 6 might be sporting the 6GB Exynos processor with this new technology by the company. We have to wait to see if any other companies start including the 6GB RAM in their next flagships even before Samsung.
