OnePlus had come into existence not long ago. Since its launch, we have seen only four smartphones from the brand. Call that an achievement for a brand because we see smartphone brands launching devices every few days or weeks, but OnePlus has achieved a lot with those handful number of launches. OnePlus One was regarded as the flagship killer, and then follow the OnePlus 2, which received some flack.
Before we saw the next flagship from the company yesterday, there was a phone that aimed at the mid-range market and had a completely different build quality. It was the OnePlus X, which was hated by almost none. Not even one would’ve asked why OnePlus came up with a new series in between, because what was on offer earlier was all good and OnePlus X soon became a worthy choice for the price.
Now, while launching the OnePlus 3, Pete Lau, CEO of OnePlus says that the company is officially bidding a goodbye to the OnePlus X so as to concentrate on a single series, i.e. the flagship one.
The focus on True flagship is not the only plan for the future, as OnePlus plans to merge the development resources for the Oxygen OS (global) and Hydrogen OS (China). The company will also work on ideas as usual to market the company and the phones, but now, you won’t see anything after the OnePlus X, and it gets rested. As of now, we still see the OnePlus X available, but there won’t be any successor to it.
In China, the company won’t be seeing any physical store launches, and it will be an online presence. “This will all make sense in 20 years’ time,” Lau added. “Some vendors say the online model is stalling so they badmouth it, but I see that as an opportunity. You just have to remain persistent.”
