After teasing the public for months, the Chinese Smartphone marker OnePlus has finally launched their flagship for 2018, the OnePlus 6, today, at an event in London. The OnePlus 6 is the first OnePlus smartphone to come with the modern, notched 19:9 display, which is reminiscent of iPhone X’s design and a 256 GB storage variant with a glass back.
Design & Display
The OnePlus 6 sports a Full HD+ 6.28-inch Full Optic AMOLED display with a resolution of 2280×1080. The 19:9 notched display has support for sRGB and DCI P3 color gamut and it is protected under Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The phone’s rear comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 which is coated with 6 layers of anti glare coating which creates a unique S shape when held under light at a certain angle.
Processor, RAM & Storage
The phone is powered by Snapdragon 845 chipset with Adreno 630 GPU. It comes in either 6 GB or 8 GB LPDDR4X RAM variants along with 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB UFS2.1 storage. Like every other OnePlus phone, the phone doesn’t come with expandable storage. The phone runs on Oxygen OS 5.1 based on Android 8.1 Oreo. The OnePlus 6 is also one of the first devices to support Android P Beta, prior to the official device launch.
Cameras
Just like its predecessor, the OnePlus 6 also comes with dual cameras on the back, with a 16 MP main camera which uses a Sony IMX 519 sensor with a 1.22um pixel size along with a 20 MP secondary camera which uses a Sony IMX 376K. The rear cameras now records 4K videos at 60 fps and also comes with both OIS and EIS for stabilized video recording. The rear camera comes with portrait mode which offers users lens flare effect and an option to change the shape of the light bokeh to different shapes such as heart, star, diamond and other shapes along with the usual circular bokeh. The phone can record slow-motion videos at a frame rate of 480 fps at 720p resolution for 3.75 secs, which results in 1 minute of actual footage.
To the front, the phone comes with 16 MP camera with AI selfie that is housed in the notch. The selfie camera will get a software update in future which will enable the same portrait mode effects on front camera as well.
Miscellaneous
For security, OnePlus 6 has a rear mounted fingerprint scanner along with face-unlock, which unlocks the phone in 0.2 secs and 0.4 secs, respectively. The phone packs in a 3300 mAh battery underneath, which can be fast charged providing a day’s charge in just 30 mins using the bundled proprietary 20 Watt (5V 4A) Dash Charger. The Oxygen OS now comes with game acceleration mode which limits resources for other apps and also uses CPU frequency bursts for faster game launch.
For connectivity, it has dual 4G VoLTE support, GPS, GLONASS, BDS, dual band Wi-Fi 802.11 ac, 4×4 MIMO, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, and a USB Type C port for charging and data transfer. The phone retains the 3.5 mm headphone, while most flagship phones these are ditching it the Apple way. OnePlus says the OP6 can withstand normal water splashes, although the company hasn’t mentioned any IP rating. OnePlus has switched its popular Alert Slider to the right from the usual left position that was first introduced on the OnePlus 2.
