Well, it was the only thing that was left to be done by the company. Officially announce the OnePlus 5 to the public, and now we know everything about the phone. OnePlus does put up a few teasers and market its phones in a few ways before the launch every year but this time, there was a lot more done, especially with the entire design shown through TV ads, days before the official unveiling. Anyway, here’s everything you need to know about the newly launched OnePlus 5.
The OnePlus 5 continues with the same screen size from the time its first phone was launched and there is no competition as such put up against the edge-to-edge screen of the Galaxy S8 or with the 18:9 wide screen of the LG G6. It does have slimmer bezels but the general placement and utilization of the front remains the same with wide areas left for the sensors, camera, and the home button above and below the display. It is a 2.5D glass on the front, while the back has a metal plate just like it was on the predecessor OnePlus 3, but that’s the only similarity here.
The back of the phone looks a lot similar to the iPhone 7 Plus. Some might discredit OnePlus for not innovating but there was a lot of selection done and the company ended up with this design. Let’s give Apple a little credit and move on as that’s what you end up with when you have to pack so much internally and then need a combination of two cameras on the back.
The OnePlus 5 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor with Adreno 540 GPU, and it was well expected to see the phone having enough RAM and internal storage for users to not worry about it for a good time. It is the LPDDR4X RAM and variants with 6GB and 8GB RAM with storage options of 64GB and 128GB respectively. Also, it is the dual-lane storage that is said to make the storage performance better by 50%.
There are some new features included in the OxygenOS (based on Android 7.1.1 Nougat) and one of them includes the Reading Mode that makes it monochrome and helps match the ambient light for a better reading. It takes advantage of the ambient sensor.
The OnePlus 5 has a dual-lens camera combination on the back. The main camera is a 16-megapixel Sony IMX 398 unit with an f/1.7 aperture lens. The second camera has a 20-megapixel Sony sensor with an f/2.6 “telephoto” lens. There is 4K video recording. The cameras have fast Autofocus and thanks to this specific camera combination, the autofocus speed is 40% better.
The HDR is said to be improved as well. The exposure, White balance, and focus is set automatically with the Smart Capture feature. The Portrait mode that you might be familiar with from the iPhone 7 Plus is also available here and thus, you will be able to get bokeh effects taking advantage of the two cameras.
The phone has a 3300 mAh battery with the Dash Charge support. In about 30 minutes, the OnePlus 5 can charge to up o 58% from zero. There is a fingerprint sensor at the same location as it is always on the OnePlus devices and it is said to have been made better with the 0.2 second unlock.
For the connectivity options, there is Wi-Fi 2×2 MIMO, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, 2.4/5 GHz, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, 4G with VoLTE, Cat. 12 LTE, and there is a single global variant with support for 34 network bands.
The device has 3 microphones with noise cancellation, and there is Dirac HD Sound. The color options made available are the Midnight Black and Slate Grey.
The 6GB RAM variant of the OnePlus 5 is priced at $479 (499 Euros in Europe) and early drop shipments are going to start from on June 21 via free priority shipping and the actual sales start from June 27th. In India, the smartphone is getting launched on June 22nd and it will be available exclusively on Amazon India.
