Cyanogen Inc. is planning to go ahead with what Google has done with the Android One program, releasing cheap smartphone running on Stock OS. Google’s Android One program has not got as much success as the company would have liked but this is not deterring Cyanogen from going into the same territory.
Cyanogen has announced that it will be launching new lineup of very cheap smartphones into emerging markets along with a Flagship smartphone. In a recent press conference, Cyanogen has announced their plan for 2016 with multiple $75 smartphones powered by CyanogenMod 13 in next year.
Along with the stock ROM which is going to be Cyanogen 13 based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS, the company is also promising better hardware compared to the smartphones in similar price range. Google had committed the mistake of offering stock Android with normal specifications which were not so appealing to users.
Cyanogen’s Steve Kondik has confirmed that along with the budget smartphones there will be a flagship smartphone in 2016 by Cyanogen. There were no further details revealed about the flagship device. Cyanogen will provide SDK’s to its partners for custom apps and make sure that there are no overlaps. This means that there will ne no two apps which do the same functions like two browsers given in some devices.
There was no news about the manufacturing of the smartphones, currently Cyanogen OS powered smartphones from companies like YU, BQ, ZUK, Wileyfox and Smartfren. The exact release dates and the specifications of the devices has not been revealed. It will be interesting to see how Cyanogen will compete in the segment where Google had failed to woo customers.
