One of the most exciting parts about the iPhone 7 launch was the announcement and video showing how well the new Jet Black variant of the device is manufactured. The keynote ends, Apple’s website and store is back with the new iPhones listed with every information that you wanted. But that’s where the disappointment is. The specs page of the device clearly states that the Jet Black variant is prone to scratching and you need to take precautions if you are concerned about it.
It isn’t the case with other models, and that’s obvious because they don’t have a glossy finish that the Jet Black model has. Here’s what the note mentions.
The high-gloss finish of the jet black iPhone 7 is achieved through a precision nine-step anodization and polishing process. Its surface is equally as hard as other anodized Apple products; however, its high shine may show fine micro-abrasions with use. If you are concerned about this, we suggest you use one of the many cases available to protect your iPhone.
The strength of the material is not at question here because Apple claims that the surface is as hard as any other one. But it is the scratching or micro-abrasion that will be clearly visible on the surface of the Jet Black variant of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.
Protection of any smartphone, not just the iPhone or the Jet Black variant of it in this case, is a clear compromise with not just the looks but also with the comfort and feel of holding the device in the hand. Unless you use a premium case that you pay a good amount for, the case feels unnecessary on the phone if you don’t have an intention of protecting its screen or corners during an impact or fall.
In this case, you are asked to use a case to avoid seeing those scratches that the surface is vulnerable to, taking away the good look of the phone.
It is good that Apple is warning the users about it, rather than facing a flak from the users who purchase it and regret not taking any care of it. But, will you purchase the Jet Black variant of the iPhone 7 or the iPhone 7 Plus if you are to use a case for the phone all the time?

Hello
First of all, Thank you for your response. Actually, I’ve prebooked iPhone 7 with Jet Black color & yesterday now I got a call from the company that for the jet black color you need to wait for a month. So thought why not to ask you coz you guys already have your hands on Jet Black.
Thank you for the post also. 🙂
