Remember the Android king Andy Rubin? He’s reportedly coming back into the scene and how! A new smartphone brand is in the making if we believe the reports from Bloomberg. According to these reports, the plans are quite serious and we may see not just a smartphone but a plethora of products including some that form an ecosystem.
It is said that the company that Andy Rubin will run is named Essential and it is currently having about 40 people. Several of the people in the company are said to be brought in from Google and Apple. Essential will compete in the high-end / top tier segment of smartphones and if the rumors are to be believed, Andy Rubin was in talks with the execs of the wireless carriers during the CES 2017 event and that was for the smartphone launch itself.
According to the same reports, the phone that the new company is working on is likely to have an edge-to-edge display without bezel and it should be either 5.5-inch or larger than that in size, and for the build, we might see it clad in premium materials including a ceramic body. It also goes on to say that the phone might be modular to a certain level and that means, you should be seeing stuff like Moto Z where hardware add-ons would be able to enhance the usability.
It could use Android as the OS but there is nothing certain of that yet. One of the leaks though indicates the presence of the latest Android version, i.e. Android 7.0 Nougat OS that is running in a device full of power. It will be interesting to see what Essential is planning in order to compete with the likes of iPhone 7 and Google Pixel.
Always good to see more competition!
