Google announced that its Android Wear will be rebranded as Wear OS by Google. Google has termed its Wear OS “a wearable operating system for everyone” in its blog post. Google is said to push an update to select devices in the coming weeks.
The move seems to be a desperate attempt by Google to revive its stale wearable platform, by giving it a logo overhaul. The update doesn’t bring any new features to the platform except for a logo refresh. Google has also mentioned the list of devices which would be getting the Wear OS update.
Wear OS by Google works with phones running Android 4.4+ (excluding Go edition) and iOS 9.3+. Supported features may vary across watches, phones and countries.
Dennis Troper, Director of Product Management, Wear OS said about this update,
“We’re announcing a new name that better reflects our technology, vision, and most important of all – the people who wear our watches. We’re now Wear OS by Google, a wearables operating system for everyone.” He further added, “You’ll begin to see the new name on your watch and phone app over the next few weeks.”
