With the number of Android wear running smartwatches entering the market targeting fitness activities, Nixon which is another timepiece company entering the competitive smartwatch segment with the Nixon Mission,  targeting surfers and snowboarding enthusiasts. The California-based company has announced the Nixon which is a rugged smartwatch with 10-ATM water resistance rating capable of holding up to 100 meters, which is the most by any smartwatch till date.
It is being called a smartwatch for surfers and snowboarders/skiers because it comes with a pair of pre-loaded apps to give up-to-date info on conditions for surfing around the world, like the size of waves etc. It is a round-faced watch made of polycarbonate and stainless steel along with a multi-color AMOLED display protected by Gorilla Glass making it sturdy and rugged yet comfortable to wear.
The Nixon Mission runs on Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon Wear 2100 chipset which is a wearable-specific system on a chip which uses 25 percent less power than its predecessor. Nixon is not new to smartwatches, earlier it has the Ultratide watch which is a $300 smart sports watch capable of connecting to smartphones via Bluetooth and send alerts when the surf is good or bad.
With the Ultratide restricted to just sports activity like tracking surf sessions etc the Nixon Mission runs on Android Wear which opens many new features and uses. Â It comes with a stainless steel shell with a silicone band that provides both comfort and durability. Users can customize the Mission to their needs with options to customize the finish of it along with bezel and band colors to make a unique color scheme of your liking.
Commenting on the launch, Nixon CEO Nick Stowe, said, “We wanted to make our entrance into the smart category in a disciplined and purposeful way by bringing functions that are useful and true to our DNA and action sports heritage.” There is no word about the battery and the devices battery life or availability of the Nixon Mission which is expected to be priced around $400.
