You might now not be surprised at seeing the news of smartphones coming without a 3.5mm headset jack. Just a day ago, the LeEco Le 2 and Le Max 2 were launched and they had no headset jack, instead asking the users to buy headphones with USB Type-C pin or an adapter that converts Type-C to the standard 3.5mm port. Enter Moto Z and Moto Z Force from Motorola, you will hear the same!
The Moto Z and Moto Z Force are officially announced at the Lenovo Tech World. The first thing to notice is their sleek and slim design, and that being the reason for the company to ditch the headset jack. Again, the company is claiming them to be modular phones, just like how LG did for the flagship G5, and even though they are not truly flagship like you’d expect one, the Moto Z series has the support for “Mods” that add to the capability and experience.
To connect the Moto Mods (which are the accessories that can be added on the back of the device), there are magnetic connectors on the back of the phones. A pico projector, a speaker from JBL, and battery packs given by Incipio, Tumi and Kate Spade are the initial Mods available.
Now, let’s talk about the specifications. The Moto Z is quite an upgrade from the Moto X, and it comes with a 5.5-inch Quad HD display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor and 4GB of RAM. It is quite lighter than the Moto X Pure and Force, with the weight being at 136 grams. There is a 12-megapixel rear camera with f/1.8 aperture, 1.12um pixel size, Dual-LED color correction flash, OIS, and laser autofocus, while on the front is a 5-megapixel shooter. The Moto Z is 5.19mm in thickness. What’s the downside with the thinner body? Not just the exclusion of 3.5mm headset jack, but also that you see a 2600 mAh battery packed in.
On the other side, the Moto Z Force is exclusive to the U.S., and it has a larger battery with 3500 mAh battery capacity, so it gets a thickness of 6.9mm. On the camera side, you see a 21-megapixel camera on the back with phase detection autofocus and Deep Trench Isolation. Motorola’s Shattershield technology that was a part of the Moto Force is what comes on the front, claiming to be far more scratch resistant than the standard protections.
The phones run Android Marshmallow, and there is a fingerprint scanner on the front just like how it is on the Moto G4 Plus. While it is not confirmed yet, we expect the devices to have Quick Charge 3.0 support through the USB Type-C port. The devices have a stainless steel-and-aluminum body and it is the AMOLED display on both the units.
The Moto Z is going to be available internationally in September. The unlocked version of the device will be available during fall, and for now, it will be available only via. Verizon. Lenovo says that the Moto Z Force will be a U.S.-only device for now.
