YouTube Music was a service announced alongside YouTube Red, and this is a music version of the original YouTube app. The app is designed to help in two ways, discovery and background play. With the current YouTube app, one has to keep the screen active as it is all about videos being played, but YouTube Music will allow playing the same without the need for the screen to be turned on.
YouTube Red is already available in limited places, and similar is the case with YouTube Music, since both of them are linked. Currently, wherever YouTube Music is available, the user will be able to enjoy a 14-day free trial to understand if the app is for them.
The app, according to the details (we couldn’t test it, since YouTube Red and Music are not available in India) has three sections – Home (where you see recommendations based on your taste), What’s Hot (suggestions based on what others are playing), and Liked (where the songs you liked, are listed).
If you are already using YouTube Red and are subscribed through its $9.99 per month plan, you can straightaway start using YouTube Music, and it works the other way as well, i.e. subscribe for YouTube Music at $9.99 per month, and you will be able to use YouTube Red within the same plan. As a bonus, this subscription will also include Google Play Music All Access.
The YouTube Music app is available for both, Android and iOS devices, and the minimum requirement is 4.0.3 and up, and iOS 7.0 for the devices. The price for iOS version is shown as $12.99 per month.
It isn’t just about background music playing, but the user can also download the music and play it offline, without the need of connectivity, and unlike the YouTube offline feature that was already available, here, there are no restrictions of which music an be downloaded.
